R shows up early in the words kids reach for (rabbit, rocket, rainbow), but it’s also one of the trickier consonant sounds to pronounce. Many young kids still say “wabbit” for years before /r/ fully clicks. That’s normal. Letter recognition and writing don’t have to wait for the speech to catch up.
Each letter R worksheet is a free printable PDF, sized for US letter or A4.
The Sounds of Letter R
R is a single-sound consonant: /r/ as in rabbit, red, rocket. It sounds slightly different at the start of a word (rain, red), the end (car, far), and in the middle (very, around). For preschool and kindergarten work, focus on R at the start of words. The blended forms come naturally once kids start reading.
The /r/ sound itself is one of the trickier ones to produce. Many kids substitute /w/ (“wabbit”) or /l/ (“lain”) for years before /r/ clicks. That’s normal and clears up on its own. Letter recognition, tracing, and writing can keep moving forward in the meantime.
Where to Start
The worksheets below build on each other. Each step asks a little more than the one before. Start where kids are and move down as they’re ready.

Letter R Recognition Worksheets
Letter recognition comes before writing. These worksheets give kids hands-on practice spotting the letter through color, cover, and find activities.
Best for kids not yet writing.
Letter R Coloring Pages
Coloring runs alongside everything else as low-pressure letter time. A reporter and a rocket give kids friendly contexts to spend time with R without any handwriting demand.
Letter R Bubble Letter Template
A big hollow R for kids to decorate, color, or cut out. The bubble letter template lets kids fill the shape with their own patterns. The finished letter doubles as wall decoration, a bulletin board feature, or part of an alphabet display. Uppercase and lowercase are on separate sheets so each gets a full page.
Letter R Tracing Worksheets
Before kids can write R from memory, their hand needs to know the shape. Tracing sheets walk them through each stroke in order, in the direction it’s meant to go.
Letter R Beginning Sounds Worksheets
Hearing /r/ and matching it to the letter shape bridges letter recognition and reading. These worksheets pair tracing with sound work. Kids say the sound as they trace, then circle pictures that start with /r/.
All-in-One Letter R Worksheet
Everything kids learned about R comes back together on this sheet: recognize, trace, hear the sound, form the letter. A useful pulse-check on whether they’re ready to move on.
R Is for…
Twelve words starting with R. All use the /r/ sound at the start, which is the cleanest version of R to hear.
- rabbit
- red
- rocket
- rainbow
- ring
- robot
- rose
- ride
- run
- rain
- river
- read
Read these out loud and have kids repeat them back. /r/ at the start of a word is the easiest version to hear because it’s not blended with the vowel. That makes it a good place to focus while the sound is still developing.
No-Prep Letter R Activities
Eight things to do with the letter R using what’s already in the house or classroom.
- Rainbow R. Draw a big R on paper. Kids color stripes inside following the rainbow order.
- Rock R. Collect rocks outside and line them along a chalk-drawn R on the driveway.
- Run-the-R. Use masking tape to make a giant R on the floor. Kids run along the lines.
- Playdough R. Roll out playdough and carve an R into it with a finger or a butter knife.
- R hunt. Walk through the house and point to every R you can find on labels, books, and signs.
